Panel Discussion
CENTER and the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) present Critical Business Practices for Photographers in Publishing & Editorial, a panel discussing the most important business practices for navigating the ever-shifting landscape of publishing and editorial industries. We will consider how publications license and commission visual storytelling, and address questions regarding reading and revising licensing agreements, contracts, and important specifics from the perspective of both the photographer and the client.
Panelists include Alyssa Coppelman, Deputy Art Director at Harper’s Magazine and Art Researcher for the Oxford American Magazine, Whitney Johnson, VP of Visuals and Immersive Experiences at National Geographic, and Thomas Maddrey, General Counsel and Head of National Content and Education for ASMP in conversation with Moderator Holly Stuart Hughes, Independent Editor, Writer, and Grant consultant.

The New Mexico chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) advocates the highest standards of professional photography, offering programs, seminars and timely news, providing business support to its member, encouraging education, and promoting camaraderie in the larger photographic community in New Mexico.
Moderator
HOLLY STUARY HUGHES is an independent editor, writer, and grant consultant. The former editor-in-chief of PDN (Photo District News), she has organized panels and lectured on artists’ rights and the business of photography around the U.S., and served as a portfolio reviewer at several photo festivals. A graduate of Yale, she has written on photography and media for Time.com, The Telegraph, Multichannel News, Taschen Books, American Photographic Artists, Magnum Photos, Carlton Publishing, and Blouin ArtInfo Media.
Panelists
ALYSSA COPPELMAN is an Austin-based photo editor and photobook consultant, who works with photographers to fine-tune the editing, sequencing, design, and editorial aspects of portfolios and book projects. She is also Deputy Art Director at Harper’s Magazine, Art Researcher at the Oxford American magazine, and Archival Researcher for the Emmy-nominated PBS NewsHour series, Brief But Spectacular. Alyssa regular juries photography exhibitions, has taught editing workshops, and enjoys being a guest lecturer to both undergraduate and graduate photography students.
WHITNEY JOHNSON leads the team responsible for photography, emerging formats, video, and podcast operations. Prior to joining National Geographic magazine, she was the director of photography at The New Yorker where her work was widely recognized, earning awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors; Awards of Excellence from the Society of Publication Designers; and a Peabody, in collaboration with Human Rights Watch and the photographer Platon. Whitney also enjoys teaching and mentoring in photography.
THOMAS MADDREY is General Counsel and Head of National Content & Education for the American Society of Media Photographers. Previously, he founded Maddrey PLLC, a law firm focused on creators’ rights. For over a decade prior to becoming an attorney, Thomas was a commercial and fine art photographer based in Dallas, TX.
