CENTER’s 2026 Project Launch Grant Recipient, Marcus DeSieno presents his project, Geography of Disappearance: Migrant Deaths on the US/Mexico Border. The UN has declared the border between the United States and Mexico to be the deadliest land crossing in the world and a humanitarian crisis. Thousands of men, women, and children have died crossing the over 1,900 mile border through brutal deserts and impassible mountains with harsh climate conditions year-round. The US government strategically uses draconian policies here that follow a philosophy of “prevention through deterrence,” forcefully directing migrants into unforgiving terrain where they wander for days in the elements. Many of these migrants are sometimes never found as they die in the vast emptiness of the wilderness. The earth reclaims their bodies, and they disappear.

Obscura Gallery presents Where do I Go, by Review Santa Fe alum, Rania Matar, with a photographic exhibition from the recent book. The exhibit and supporting book are collaborations with the young women of Lebanon, seeking collectively to commemorate and to reimagine the future of a country defined by half a century of conflict and catastrophe.

Following opening remarks at the 25th Annual Review Santa Fe, CENTER’s Project Development Grant recipient, Leonard Suryajaya, will discuss his project Parting Gift - a visual elegy for kinship under migration, composed as staged 4×5 large-format family tableaux created across Indonesia, rural Oregon, and Chicago. The project brings together the artist’s Indonesian relatives, white rural in-laws, and urban community, placing people shaped by divergent histories into a shared visual space.
