  • Pollution in Abstract

This photographic series presents avant-garde images of the iridescent rainbow-colored patterns of drips and drops of oil, gasoline, and other pollutants found on pavement when it rains. Most people do not notice this insidious form of water pollution; however, I estimate the amount of oil, gasoline, and other pollutants dripped from motor vehicles in the United States alone is more than the volume of oil spilled during the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill…every year! My intent has been to make intriguing abstract close-up images to: attract viewers; trigger an awareness of this huge water pollution problem; draw connections between their activities (such as driving vehicles that leak oil, dumping motor oil, etc.) and this form of pollution; and, provide information on actions that can be taken to reduce this pollution. My Father, Mother, and Sister died of cancers that may be attributed to environmental pollution and this has motivated my efforts since 1990.
