A New Masculinity: Portraits & Reception

September 20, 2025

The project A New Masculinity is an exploration through photography and conversation. Artist Tim Keane invites volunteer sitters, representing a cross section of demographics, to set aside outward personas for a portrait. The process attempts to move beyond documentation and allows the camera and artist to serve as the witness to the other.

The event includes a reception with an exhibit of past work, an open discussion, and portrait sessions.

From previous participants:

Having my photograph taken was unexpectedly empowering. Initially, I felt nervous and exposed, but Tim’s respectful and empathetic approach quickly put me at ease. The experience was cathartic, allowing me to see beauty in my vulnerability. When I saw the final images, I felt proud and more connected to myself than ever before.”

“Participating in this project was an invitation for me to share in that truth, to expose the quiet vulnerability often hidden within my masculinity.
In a world that so often demands strength at the expense of softness, this project creates space for a different narrative, one where to be seen is not just an act of exposure but of connection. It affirms that masculine vulnerability is not an anomaly but a fundamental part of my human experience, deserving of recognition and reverence.”
